Payments for Pet Boarding & Daycare: What Stripe, Square, and the Big Processors Actually Cost You

The short version: boarding payments are deposits, packages, and big multi-night stays — which means card-on-file billing and large tickets, the two things that make processors the most money and explain the least. Below: the fee math at your real ticket sizes, the deposit-and-package workflow, and the honest verdict per processor. Rates checked October 2026. The fee table: what each processor actually charges you

Your tickets, their published rates:

  • $45 daycare day (in person): Square 2.6% + 15¢ = $1.32 (2.9%) · Stripe in-person 2.7% + 5¢ = $1.27 (2.8%)
  • $300 five-night stay (in person at pickup): Square = $7.95 (2.65%) · Stripe = $8.15 (2.7%)
  • $262.50 holiday deposit (card on file / online): Square 3.5% + 15¢ = $9.34 (3.6%) · Stripe 3.4% + 30¢ = $9.23 (3.5%)
  • $700 twenty-day daycare package (card on file): Square = $24.65 (3.5%) · Stripe = $24.10 (3.4%) · ACH (0.8% capped at $5) = $5.00 — the package is where ACH earns its keep: $5 vs $24, every package, every renewal
  • $300 stay via texted payment link (online rate): 2.9% + 30¢ = $9.00 (3.0%)

Adyen, Chase Payment Solutions, Fiserv (Clover), Global Payments, and Worldpay: no published flat rates, no boarding-specific content. The trade-specific payments conversation for boarding lives on kennel-software blogs — the giants are entirely absent.

The workflow checklist the big processors fail

  • Deposits at booking as the default. The holiday deposit is the industry's cash-flow engine. Processors support stored cards; none of them gives you "deposit link by text at booking" as a native flow, and all price it at the premium tier.
  • Daycare packages: sell once, draw down daily. The $700 package needs package tracking (days remaining), auto-renewal prompts, and ideally ACH billing. Generic processors see 20 separate $35 charges; your software needs to see one package.
  • Cancellation-fee enforcement. The 7-day holiday cancellation policy only works if the card is on file and the charge fires automatically with a receipt. Manual enforcement is no enforcement.
  • Incidentals and add-ons at pickup. Meds, extra play sessions, the bath before pickup — the final invoice changes at pickup. The processor flow has to handle "authorize $262.50 at booking, capture $318 at pickup" cleanly.
  • Chargeback defense on big stays. A $900 two-week stay disputed after the fact needs the signed boarding agreement, the report cards, and the pickup signature in one place. Processors don't do this; your kennel software has to (Gingr's document storage is built for it).

Flat-rate vs interchange-plus at boarding volumes

A 40-run facility doing $60,000/mo in card sales, ~400 transactions (big tickets): Square flat 2.6% + 15¢ = $1,560 + $60 = ~$1,620/mo (2.7%). Interchange-plus at ~2.0% + 10¢: $1,200 + $40 = ~$1,240/mo. Gap: ~$380/mo, ~$4,560/yr.

The boarding-specific wrinkle, again: deposits and packages on stored cards price at 3.4–3.5% under both models — the premium tier follows the card-not-present flow, not the rate model. So the real savings stack is: (1) ACH for packages ($5 vs $24 per package — at 30 packages a month, that's $570/mo alone, dwarfing the rate-model decision); (2) interchange-plus for the card volume; (3) deposits collected early (cash flow, not fees, but cash flow is the business). Do them in that order.

The honest verdict on each processor

  • Square: fine for the front desk — good hardware, honest rates. The stored-card premium (3.5% + 15¢) taxes your deposits and packages; offset it with ACH for packages. At 30 packages a month, the ACH switch alone (~$570/mo saved) is the single biggest line item in this entire guide — bigger than any rate negotiation you'll ever have.
  • Stripe: best through your kennel software (Gingr and others process via Stripe) — the authorize-at-booking/capture-at-pickup flow is a Stripe-native pattern. Stripe-direct only if you're building custom.
  • Clover/Fiserv: capable hardware, reseller pricing. Interesting only with interchange-plus in writing at real volume.
  • Adyen / Chase / Global Payments / Worldpay: the quote maze. Zero boarding content, zero reason to engage below chain scale. Never sign the first quote.

The workflow layer — voice-built invoices, texted deposit links, package renewals from tools like ClaroPro — decides whether deposits get collected in October or chased in December. That's worth more than the rate.

Notes from Finix's public docs

Finix's public docs (docs.finix.com) cover the exact patterns boarding runs on: authorize-and-capture (authorize the deposit at booking, capture the adjusted total at pickup), stored credentials for packages and recurring daycare, and payment links for the texted deposit. These are the buying questions for your kennel software vendor: "do you do auth-and-capture natively? Stored credentials with scheduled charging? Texted links?" If the software can't, the processor can't save you.

FAQ

Should daycare packages be ACH or card? ACH, every time — $5 vs $24 on a $700 package. Present ACH as the default at package sale ("packages bill automatically on the 1st"); keep card as the backup, not the primary. Present it as how packages work here and most clients won't blink — the path of least resistance is your friend.

How do I handle the "my dog got sick there" chargeback? Documentation wins: signed boarding agreement, vaccine records on file, report cards with photos, pickup signature. Store all of it in the kennel software. Processors decide chargebacks on evidence; the facility with the paper trail wins.

Can I require deposits for holiday boarding? Yes — disclosed at booking, card stored with consent. 50% for peak periods is industry standard. The facilities that don't require deposits are the ones with the October cash-flow panic.

What about tips for the kennel staff? Tip prompts on the pickup receipt (digital or terminal) — boarding clients tip less often than grooming clients, but the prompt costs nothing and the staff notices.

The boarding payments playbook: deposits on every booking (card on file, disclosed, enforced), ACH for every package, interchange-plus at real volume, and the auth-and-capture flow your software has to support natively. The package-ACH decision alone (~$570/mo at 30 packages) beats the rate decision. Re-check yearly — "rates checked October 2026" expires. Then AI for Pet Boarding fills February, and Tech for Pet Boarding sorts the kennel software.
